Notes:

This is a fine old book of lectures on history. Beginning with Barbarians and Romans, it moves through the Dark Ages and the Reformation, covering England, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, but with most attention given to England. The last six lectures are on the American Revolution.
Bound in dark brown cloth over boards, with decorative blind-stamped designs on both covers, and lines stamped on the spine with gilt lettering.
“For example in 1840, William Smyth, a professor at the University of Cambridge published his Lectures on Modern History, based on material presented to generations of students. This book which went through five printings by 1858 provided much better, although briefer and less colorful, coverage of both the South Sea Bubble and the Mississippi Scheme than Mackay did.” (Source: Christopher Denistoun sourced as Odlyzko)
